What “getting cited” actually means
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the model composes an answer and, increasingly, names the sources behind it. Getting cited means your business is one of those named sources — the site the model pulled a fact from, the company it recommended, or the page it linked in its references.
You can’t buy your way in and there’s no submission form. Citations are earned the same way trust is earned: by being accessible, clearly written, and corroborated. The good news is that every step below is within your control, and most compound over time.
Start with accessibility
AI engines can only cite what they can read. Before anything clever, make sure the machines that build AI answers can actually reach and parse your pages. Run through this short checklist:
- Confirm AI crawlers — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended — aren’t blocked in your robots.txt.
- Make sure important pages are fast and server-rendered, so content doesn’t depend on JavaScript a crawler may never run.
- Ship clean, semantic HTML with real headings and landmarks — not a wall of unlabeled divs.
- Add an llms.txt file: a plain-text guide telling AI crawlers what matters on your site.
None of these are glamorous, but they’re the foundation. A brilliant page an assistant can’t read earns exactly zero citations.
Write answers, not just articles
Lead with the answer. AI models favor content that states a clear, concise response in the first sentence, then supports it with detail. Bury the answer three paragraphs down and you make the model work to extract it — so it often reaches for a competitor who put it up top.
Use descriptive headings phrased as real questions, short quotable sentences, and well-formatted lists and tables. Models lift self-contained passages — a sentence or two that fully answers a question without surrounding context. Write with that in mind: make each key point stand on its own.
Add an FAQ section to your most important pages. The question-and-answer format maps almost perfectly to how people prompt AI, and it’s some of the most-cited content on the web. Pair it with FAQ schema so the structure is machine-readable, not just visible.
Give machines structured facts
Structured data removes ambiguity. Schema markup for your organization, services, articles, reviews, and FAQs hands the model a clean, labeled version of your facts — your name, location, hours, offerings, and claims — so it doesn’t have to guess them from your page layout.
This matters most for the details that decide local recommendations. If your address, phone number, and service area are spelled out in schema and repeated identically across your site and profiles, an assistant can state them with confidence. Confidence is what gets you named.
Build corroborated authority
AI models trust facts they can verify in more than one place. Keep your business name, address, services, and key claims consistent across your website, directories, and profiles — inconsistencies quietly erode trust. Earn mentions from other reputable local sources, because a claim you make about yourself carries far less weight than the same claim echoed elsewhere.
Demonstrate real expertise. Named authors, credentials, first-hand experience, and specifics only a practitioner would know — these are the E-E-A-T signals AI uses to decide who’s credible. Generic, anonymous content is easy to write and easy to ignore. Specific, experienced content is what models quote.
Then measure and refine
Track which prompts surface your business, which cite competitors instead, and how that changes over time. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and note who gets named. Visibility inside AI answers is now a KPI — treat it like one, and let the gaps tell you what to write next.
Getting cited isn’t a one-time task; it’s a habit. Publish answer-first content, keep your facts consistent, earn genuine mentions, and re-check your visibility regularly. The businesses that treat it as ongoing are the ones AI keeps recommending.
Local Visibility. Real Growth.
